A New York City drunk driving charge can bring serious criminal penalties. It can also wreak havoc on a person's professional and personal life.

The principal of a prestigious Manhattan high school is facing this problem after a New York DUI accident that occurred late last month.

The woman was driving northbound on Route 9W in South Nyack when she lost control of her vehicle and crashed into a police cruiser that was pulled over on the side of the highway. Thankfully, neither the officer nor the driver he had previously pulled over were injured.

The woman admitted to having consumed alcohol, although she would not say how much. She refused a breath test, but the officer reported she had slurred speech, impaired coordination and smelled of alcohol.

Professional Consequences of Drunk Driving

The principal is now facing a flurry of potential consequences, many of which may have a substantial impact on her professional career.

As a result of refusing a sobriety test at the scene of the accident, she may lose her driving privileges for at least one year.

The penalties for refusing a breath test are separate from the penalties for the actual DWI itself. The incident was the principal's first offense, meaning she also faces up to one year in jail, a $2,500 fine and a one-year license revocation.

Obviously, jail time brings serious repercussions. Often though, losing a driver's license can be just as bad. Without the ability to drive, it can be very difficult to get to work or travel to meetings. Cab fares add up quickly, and can lead to financial troubles in other areas.
